Seller Is A Private Party And Purchaser Holds A Valid Michigan CPL
- Seller fills out a Firearm Sales Record (RI-060) with Purchaser/Seller/Firearm information and Buyer’s CPL Number and provides a copy to purchaser.
- Seller keeps one copy and returns the law enforcement copy of Firearm Sales Record to their (seller’s) law enforcement jurisdiction (Police Department/Sheriff’s Office) within 10 days.
- Police Department/Sheriff’s Office enter pistol information into MiPistol and mails the Firearms Sales Record to Michigan State Police Firearms Records Unit.
Seller Is A Private Party And Purchaser Does Not Hold A Valid Michigan CPL
- Purchaser MUST apply for License To Purchase (RI-010) from local Police Department/Sheriff’s Office.
- Local Police Department/Sheriff’s Office conducts background check through Law Enforcement Information Network (to include NICS and NCIC) and APPROVES or DENIES.
- If APPROVED, Purchaser proceeds to make purchase with private party within 30 days of License To Purchase issuance.
- Seller fills out the License To Purchase with Seller/Firearm information and provides a copy to purchaser.
- Seller returns the License To Purchase to the Licensing Authority with 10 days.
- Police Department/Sheriff’s Office enter pistol information into MIPistol and sends License To Purchase to Michigan State Police Firearms Records Unit.
Long Guns
Seller Is A Private Party And Purchaser Holds A Valid Michigan CPL
- A NICS background check is not required.
- Seller fills out a Firearms Sales Record, (RI-060), with Purchaser/Seller/Firearm information and Purchasers CPL number
- Sellers keeps one copy of the FSR and provides a copy to purchaser.
- State Registration not required for non-pistol transfers. (i.e. Over 26 inches in length).
Seller Is A Private Party And Purchaser Does Not Hold A Valid Michigan CPL
- Purchaser MUST apply for a License to Purchase a Firearm (RI-010) from local Police Department/Sheriff’s Office.
- Local Police Department/Sheriff’s Office conducts background check through Law Enforcement Information Network (to include NICS and NCIC) and APRROVES or DENIES.
- If APPROVED, Purchaser proceeds to make purchase with private party within 30 days of License To Purchase Issuance.
- Seller fills out the License To Purchase with Seller/Firearm information and provides a copy to purchaser
- State registration is not required for non-pistol (i.e. Over 26 inches in length).
